This is an advanced pathology training for students who have already completed the M2 Level 1 program with Vaidya Atreya Smith. This subject is about individual pathology's in the Level 3 (M2 3.1). In this training Vaidya Atreya uses the Caraka Samhita to explain the detailed approach of Dosha pathology.

M2.3.2 Vikriti Vijnana (pathology) training

Vaidya Atreya Smith will teach advanced methods focusing on Ayurveda pathology.

In this training, Vaidya Atreya will use the Caraka Samhita to explore the different pathologies created by the three Dosha; Vata, Pitta, Kapha. In general, there are 5 to 8 causes of disease (Nidana Roga) that manifest themselves differently for each person. This is an advanced teaching that is very useful for students studying Dravyaguna Nidana Level 3. It discusses how to understand the pathology in order to specify which herbs to use in treatment, and whether the practitioner should treat the structure or function. The training is presented as half online study and half face-to-face study with Vaidya Atreya Smith.

This is a compulsory course for obtaining the federal diploma of M2 level in Switzerland. Students are required to complete three case studies of three different patients for the attestation (9 total).

This is an advanced training for students who have already completed the M2 Level 1 program with Vaidya Atreya Smith. Nidana is the study of disease and its manifestations. Specifically it is the study of causal factors for disease and develops all forms of diagnosis in Ayurveda. This training is taught as part of the Level 2 (M2 2.1) . In this training Vaidya Atreya uses the Nidana Sthana of Caraka Samhita to explain the detailed approach of disease formation. Students from other schools are welcome to do this online training.

M2.2.2 Roga Nidana Vijnana

Roga Nidana Vijnana training is based on the study of the 8 chapters of Nidana Sthana from the Caraka Samhita to explain the detailed approach to the cause and formation of disease. The aim of Pañca Nidāna is to use a variety of means to understand disease and its associated pathology. A single way of looking at pathology will not be sufficient, as it may miss the full circumstances of disease manifestation. Therefore, a comprehensive methodology is presented in five steps to establish a standard protocol in the analysis of Ayurvedic pathology. The training takes the form of a series of 8 online courses of 2 hours each that cover the 8 chapters of Nidana Sthana.

This advanced diagnostic course in Ayurveda is open to all Ayurveda students. An attestation of 32 hours of study in Ayurveda will be issued by the European Institute of Vedic Studies.

M2.1.2 Advanced diagnostic training (Vikriti Pariksha)

Vaidya Atreya Smith will teach all methods of diagnosis focusing on pulse diagnosis which helps to clarify pathology in Ayurvedic medicine.

The first day will review all forms of diagnosis (tongue, pulse, etc.) and the second day will revise pulse diagnosis and then show how to use this data to establish a treatment plan for the patient. This is a different course than those taught by Vaidya Atreya in the past years. This training will help students practice Ayurvedic medicine in a more medical manner. It is a mandatory module for the Swiss Federal Diploma.
Ayurveda treats the causal dosha and not the symptoms of dosha. Therefore, this course will develop the understanding of the diagnosis of dosha imbalances. and the resulting pathology. This course is open to all students of Ayurveda. Registrations may be declined based on availability. Priority is given to students of EIVS.

This is a compulsory course for obtaining the federal diploma of M2 level in Switzerland. Students are required to complete three case studies for the attestation (3 total).

M2.3.1 Course Description

This is the only program on Dravyaguna outside of India that teaches students how to use local medicinal plants and formulate preparations according to the classical Ayurveda.

The true Ayurvedic approach to herbal medicine is the ability to diagnose which Dosha causes the problem (Nidana). Thus, a wise practitioner recommends plants that:
– reduce the Dosha causing the disorder (Kayachitkitsa)
– and that act specifically on the disorder and on the associated tissues / channels (Roga Nidana Vijnana)
– and also respect the patient's Prakriti

Atreya has written a series of textbooks to help Westerners develop a true understanding of the methods in Ayurvedic medicine. Many people in Europe use Indian plants according to their symptoms and declare that they "practicing Ayurveda". Since 1998, Vaidya Atreya Smith has been teaching students in France, Switzerland and the United Kingdom about the correct Ayurvedic use of plants and other substances. His Dravyaguna textbook includes 116 plant monographs detailing the herbs chosen according to Ayurveda. In addition, in his complementary manual "Therapeutic Guide Dravyaguna for Westerners", you will find 186 herbal formulas indicated by disorder - each formula adapted to the Dosha causing the disorder. Then, the third textbook covers more than 200 pathologies ranging from fetus to old age, giving particular importance to the treatment of children and women (as well as men and the elderly), 24 additional plant monographs have been added. This gives 140 detailed monographs of Western and Indian plants.

This training allows you to acquire the fundamental knowledge necessary for any specific Ayurveda research, and at the end of the cycle you are able to determine:

Note that the exams for the Swiss diploma are only done in the official languages of Switzerland - German, French, Italian. Additionally, this is diploma is only available for Swiss residents who have an AVS number. So if you only speak English you can follow the program but not take the exams in Bern.

For all English speaking students

It is possible to follow a slightly reduced program with EIVS to become a practitioner of Ayurveda. This option costs less money and is sufficient to qualify as practitioner in most European countries and the America's. See the table below:

"There are a multitude of courses and training nowadays available. This is a much more favorable position for students compared to some decades ago and can be attributed to the inherent effectiveness and subsequent growing demand for Ayurveda as a safe and deeply therapeutic healing science. How to register for EIVS trainings.

Registration for the M2 trainings usually open in early October each year and close on July 30th each year. Note that registrations close when a training is full regardless of the date. All trainings have limitations on the number of students. EIVS does not accept late registrations. Please be aware that most trainings are full in May or June each year. The supplementary programs, for example, M2.2.2 Roga Nidana Vijnana training, are open to students of EIVS past and present, each of these programs has special requirements. Contact EIVS for more information.

Here are the instructions for registering for any training with EIVS.

1. The first step is to choose the training you want to do, for example, M2 Foundation Level One.

2. Download the registration form from the training webpage, e.g., Level 1.

3. Fill out the registration form, sign it and then scan it, or take a photo of it and email it to the address above your signature.

4. Write a Motivation letter to Vaidya Atreya Smith explaining why you want to study with the European Institute of Vedic Studies (EIVS). Send the letter by email to the same address as the registration form.

5. Wait for Vaidya Atreya Smith to accept or reject your application. If accepted Atreya will send you a payment link to pay the registration fee.

6. Once the registration is paid you will receive a confirmation that you have been accepted by EIVS for the training that you have chosen.

7. Print out your invoice showing payment and your registration confirmation email. These documents are your proof of registration and are generated automatically.

You are now registered!

After the first year of study online, you can complete a three-week training in France on the clinical practice of Ayurveda with Gayatri, long term teacher of EIVS.

M2.2.1 - Clinical practice of Ayurveda

M2.2.1 Course description

This training allows you to acquire the fundamental knowledge necessary for any specific Ayurveda research, and at the end of the cycle you are able to determine the correct:
– Application of Samanya-Vishesha in Dosha management
– Application of Bhaishajya Kalpana (preparation of oils, etc.)
– Application of external therapies such as Snehana, Pindasvedana, etc.
– Therapeutic application of yoga asanas

– Preparations and types of medicines (Bhaishajya Kalpana)
– Phytotherapy (Dravyaguna)
– Pathology (Vikriti Vijnana)
– Treatments (Kaya Chikitsa)

– Basti (Manya Basti, Kati Basti, etc.)

Assessment:

This training requires 9 case studies to practice the techniques taught on 3 different people, with 3 different treatments per person, so 9 case studies total. There are also practical and written exams at the end of the year to complete the assessment process.
